Earth Overshoot Day
What is Earth Overshoot Day?
Earth Overshoot Day marks the date when humanity’s demand for ecological resources in a year exceeds what Earth can regenerate in that year. In other words, it’s the day we start “overdrawing” our planetary account.
Each year, this date is calculated by comparing our total ecological footprint with Earth's biocapacity. The earlier it falls, the faster we’re using up natural resources that can’t replenish fast enough.
When is Earth Overshoot Day?
This year, Earth Overshoot Day falls on July 24th. That means by late July, we’ve already used up all the natural resources Earth can renew for the year. The rest of the year, we’re essentially borrowing from the future—depleting forests, fisheries, water supplies, and contributing to climate change at an unsustainable rate.
Why Does It Matter?
Reaching Earth Overshoot Day so early is a clear signal: we’re consuming too much, too fast. This overconsumption leads to:
- Deforestation
 - Biodiversity loss
 - Soil erosion
 - Water scarcity
 - Climate change

If we want a healthy, sustainable future, we need to push Earth Overshoot Day later every year by reducing our collective ecological footprint.
